Your website is your shop window. Is the light on?

A lot of small-business websites were built years ago and left alone: slow, awkward on a phone, hard to find on Google. Seventh Avenue Media rebuilds them for trades and service businesses. Custom, hand-coded, a fixed price in writing, and yours to keep.

Walk the avenue

A walk down Seventh Avenue

Every business on this street has a website, and a website is a shop window. Some are lit. Plenty went dark years ago and nobody noticed.

A dark window doesn’t look closed. It just makes the shop next door look like the better bet.

Keep scrolling. We’ll switch them on as you pass. Here’s what we found, and what we did about it.

Plumbing & Drains

The plumber

Built in 2011 for a desktop screen. On a phone it’s a column of tiny blue links.

Relit: tap-to-call on every page, and it loads before they give up.

Real work · Panama City Beach

Photographer and drone filmmaker, Panama City Beach. This was his real website. The scaffolding comes down just up the street.

Electrical

Illustration · not a client

The electrician

“Not secure” in the address bar and an intro that never finishes loading. People leave before it starts.

Relit: secure, instant, and the emergency number is the first thing you see.

Mechanic

Illustration · not a client

The mechanic

Old hours, “coming soon” since forever, no Google Business Profile. Google sends the job down the road.

Relit: real hours synced with Google, online booking, and a map that finds the workshop.

Landscaping

Illustration · not a client

The landscaper

A builder template, an ad for the builder, and “Your Site Title”. It looks like a thousand others.

Relit: their own look, their own photos, their own name on Google.

Not every window is lit yet.

One’s still dark, and Ed’s shop is behind scaffolding. Keep walking: the inspector has been round, and the strip-out starts just ahead.

Keep walking

Your website is the first job a customer sees you do.

Customers inspect your site before they ever pick up the phone. They don’t see the years of good work, only what’s on the screen. Here’s a typical builder-era site, given a site inspection.

None of these break the site. Each one sends a job to the next name on the list.

Illustration · not a client. A dated small-business website behind a dark shop window, marked with the six snags on the notice.

Notice of inspection

Site inspected on a phone, the way a customer sees it. Six snags found.

  • The phone number is a picture. On a phone, customers can’t tap it to call.

  • © 2016 in the footer. It quietly asks, “are they still trading?”

  • Pinch and zoom to read. Built before phones were how people look you up.

  • Slow on mobile data. People hit back and tap the next result.

  • No hours, no map, no reviews. Nothing tells Google or a customer you’re local and open.

  • The form goes to an old inbox. Messages land where nobody looks.

Want one of these for your own site? Greg does the inspection free and sends you the list in plain English.

Ed’s shop gets a new front.

This is Ed Gutentag’s real old homepage. Keep scrolling: we strip it out, frame it up and hand over the new one. Here’s how it came down, and what went up in its place.

Strip out

A WordPress theme on GoDaddy hosting. A slider, a logo and a Menu button. No phone number and no way to book on the first screen.

Frame up

Hand-coded from scratch and served from Cloudflare. No theme, no page builder, no plugins to patch. Structure first: what a customer needs to see, then how they book.

Hand over

Sessions, pricing and locations in the menu, with Ed’s phone number and “Book a session” on the first screen. Greg dealt with GoDaddy for him.

“I had to keep up with him as opposed to wait for him.”

“Gregory took complete control of redoing my website … His ideas are fantastic … He is very fast … I had to keep up with him as opposed to wait for him … Gregory handled dealing with my host GoDaddy and I absolutely trusted handing it over.”
